SHEFFIELD, TX, 2013 – It is a good road if one finds oneself on it. A landscape of limestone canyons and rolling terrain passed outside my window as I traveled toward West Texas. Dry vegetation consisting of grass, junipers, prickly pears and mesquites covered the ground. A roadcut created a grade for diesel trucks bringing the highway into a hillside. Approaching milepost 343, I noticed a sign for Fort Lancaster Historic Site and chose to see the park on Lower El Paso Road.
